Mission Statement
The mission of the Community Resource Center (CRC) is to improve the quality of life for area residents by providing multiple levels of comprehensive, integrated, and accessible services supporting youth, seniors, and families in the Whittier unincorporated communities of the southeast region of Los Angeles County. As the hub of this community, the CRC brings together non-profit organizations, schools, county departments and its own direct services to provide social, health, education, and referral services to meet the needs identified by the community.
Organization's History
In the 1990's, the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA) invested $40 million to revitalize the Whittier unincorporated communities with affordable housing and infrastructure improvements. Through a unique partnership that included LACDA, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, and the local community. The CRC was opened in February 1998 to improve the quality of life for area residents by providing accessible and comprehensive services. Owned and operated by LACDA, the CRC provides programs and events aimed toward educating, training, and assisting residents of all ages within unincorporated Whittier and the surrounding communities.
LACDA's mission is to Build Better Lives and Better Neighborhoods for residents and businesses in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. The creation of the CRC furthers this mission by serving as a popular community hub and a one-stop community center for the navigation of County government, social services, and programs for area residents who are not part of any municipality.
The service area spans a 7-mile radius with 82,000 residents; larger than several of its surrounding cities. The CRC serves residents of unincorporated communities which include East, West, and South Whittier. Located in South Whittier, it encompasses 5.4 square miles with a population of over 55,000. Approximately 43% of this population is considered to be low- to moderate- income, and many have limited English skills. The CRC serves over 41,500 residents annually.
